Three phase power supply: Elenos always on-air

The transmitters Elenos Et and ETG series with three phase power supply, remain on-air (though not providing the full power) even in the case of missing one or two electrical phases. The alarm is indicated by telemetry, but the unit remains on-air also in this condition.
The transmitter is equipped by more power supplies as to make almost impossible the off-air by power failure or network partially missing. When the power supply get the proper restored, the system get back to the power.
In the menu there are “smart” readings contains as to always monitor the power supplies parameters and the relative state of health.

Elenos ETG: Thermo-controlled and servo-assisted fans

The new series of transmitters ETG 2, 3.5, 5, those who have integrated the modulator, and the ET series, have a good smart fan control. They are long life and DC and managed by a hardware logic to allow the rotation even at lower or higher regimes speed than the standard of rotation. Significant advantages: speed is metered in terms of the actual needs of the apparatus and according to the temperature of the cabin, the fans are used less at high speeds to prolong its life, less rotation of the fans means less noise and less power consumption. And if it gets too hot in location, the unit remains onair untill reaching 45 °C in the site, if the temperature increases, the apparatus increases the speed of the of the fans up to 120%, and if it is not sufficient it derates its power output to keep the area safe for devices and power supplies. In any case, the device never goes out, but works at reduced power .

Elenos ETG: Modulation always under control


The new series of transmitters ETG 2, 3.5, 5, those who have integrated the modulator, offers between the features, two different useful telemetry alarms: the sms overmodulation alarm and the lack of audio modulation one. There are also two very useful tool to keep under control constantly the RF parameters and monitor the audio. Themselves are settable (in terms of seconds before the alarm) and are a valuable aid in the prevention and detection of faults on transmission networks.

FM system 6x2KW + Reserve

The FM system 6x2KW + RESERVE showed in the picture is the last born in the Elenos.
Powered by modulators ETG is the highest expression in terms of power, efficiency and sizes.

Small size, redundancy and reliability are the main features of this line.
With these features, and many others that we invite you to discover, Elenos, is proposing the new N +1 systems series.
In a single 40 HU rack cabinet are enclosed: six ETG (TX 1- TX 6 with an output power of 2 kW), the TX reserve, ECHOS6 (Elenos change over system), the coaxial relay, the drawer MAINS for the distribution of powers supply and the ventilation system for the disposal of the exhausted air to the outside.

The ECHOS 6 is the core of everything, it’s the new logic exchange from Elenos. This allows to manage and supervise the six TX on fault, and their spare TX.
With the total control of the Echos 6, the spare TX, at the time of its ignition, automatically takes all the parameters of the TX on fault, in order to minimize the time of failure of the entire system. (function Profiles Management).

By setting a series of simple commands, and observing a front panel with a intuitive synoptic, you can configure directly and locally the entire system without a computer aid.
Anyway, everything is completely controllable remotely via GSM or via WEB.

As a failure of one of the 6 TX “ON AIR” occurs, ECHOS 6 makes the whole switch sequence in order to set “ON AIR” the spare TX, while assuring the TX on failure on the system load, everything in a few seconds.
In this way the time of no transmission of the radio station is minimized. At the same time the TX placed on the system load can be maintained by the operator without stopping the transmission.
In order to monitor consumption and save the operating costs of facilities, Elenos systems are provided with the feature “POWER OUTPUT SCHEDULE TIME”. This command allows to set different output power levels on the 24 hours of transmission. In this way, during the low audience times, the TX can be programmed to provide less output power obtaining an energetic saving for the customer.

Scalability

ELENOS adopted, many years ago, a new concept in terms of investment optimization : the “scalability.”

It is based to reuse, on different levels of scale, a basic model resources. By combining properly, in fact, a model well established and reliable , you can get very high power, using, however, the advantage of having the same technology, the same user interface, the same components, the same security and guarantee, the same knowledge to the user.

A successful concept on all fronts: flexibility in product choice, economy in the management of spare parts, economy repairs, economy in the training of employees, transferable experience.

Planar Technology

The research for better results in terms of electrical efficiency has prompted the Elenos Research and Development Dept. to develop new RF amplifier modules, that exploit the planar technology in the input and output impedance adaptation stage.

This technology was introduced by ELENOS for the first time, in FM broadcast apparatus, over 10 years ago, in the input stage.

They were RF modules employing the Philips BLF278, still widely used in the latest generation apparatus.
BLF278 is a dual MOSFET enclosed in one container, particularly suitable for use in “push-pull” amplifiers.
It is expected that the two devices are driven in opposite phase, through a circuit that achieves, at the same time, an “unbalanced-balanced” transformation of configuration,” and the necessary impedance transformation from 50 ohm to nominal input impedance.

The classic solutions are two: the first uses 4:1 “pipe” transformer, possibly adapted through inductors and capacitors, the second uses 4:1 “cable” transformer and a “balun”.
The advantage of the first solution is simplicity and compactness compared with a complex built, which makes it unsuitable for large series production.
The second solution is less elegant and occupies an area greater than the first, although the total results are certainly not inferior.

The ELENOS solution, in 1996, used coils facing to each other, separated by a thin cavity.
By designing an appropriate number of coils in the primary and secondary (in effect, the system of coils can be considered like a transformer) we obtain the desired transformer ratio, in a freed way respect classical 4:1, 9:1, 16:1 transformation ratios, and so on.
In preparation for the new LDMOS release by Freescale, has enhanced the input transformer, having superior performance, size reduction, paper insulation elimination.

In the output stage the structure is quite similar, except the involved powers, that are obviously much higher.
ELENOS has experience of substrates for printed circuit, particularly strong at high powers, and after a long and careful experimentation has validated these materials for high power applications.

Thanks to this, it is possible to exploit all the advantages of planar technology, which, as mentioned, are a lot:

  • exceptional “cleaning” of the amplifier module, which is almost avoid of electronic components;
  • greater reliability;
  • improved repeatability of performance;
  • less errors risk in production;
  • higher electrical efficiency, due to the possibility to obtain the load optimum value for the MOSFET.

ELENOS wants to win the dimension challenge, so the new RF module in planar technology is extremely compact, barely larger than the “historical” 300 W(with BLF278), but with a power more than doubled.

Reliability. The reasons for success!

The development and use of modern technology often leads to an increase of complexity.
This complexity, if not handled correctly, could jeopardize the performance of the products produced.
For this reason the aim of Elenos is to control the behaviour of equipment.
“To control” it means specifying quantitatively the behaviour of the products in time : to describe, to predict, to measure, to improve and to guarantee.
This is made possible by implementing in parallel to design a dependability plan.
This term summarizes the concepts as reliability, maintainability / logistics support for maintenance and availability.
The existence of an effective dependability program is in the interests of all parties involved: suppliers, manufacturers and customers.

The pattern followed is the specifications CEI 56-50, CEI EN 60300-1, CEI EN 60300-2, CEI EN 60300-3 and specifically it consists of:

  • systematic requirements definition
  • organization structured in terms of reliability engineering, maintainability engineering, human factors engineering and testability engineering
  • use of periodic analysis methods, as the FMECA, FTA, DBA analysis;
  • trials and testing.

Hardware, software and process are under control.

For hardware through:

  • careful design of heat system
  • design for RF high efficiency of active components
  • accurate RF dimensions(low losses)
  • low operating temperatures
  • hot spot analysis
  • best choice of components
  • improvements to the project thanks to feedback from the field.

For software through:

  • analysis of a large amount of data coming from the apparatus
  • progressive management of security operations(“derating”)
  • management of apparatus functioning “stress”
  • service in safety conditions
  • algorithms for the diagnosis of serious anomalies.

As regards the process Elenos has:

  • quality control input
  • checks and radio-electrical measures during the last phase of realization
  • tests execution under conditions of high temperature for all samples
  • random tests execution in extreme temperature conditions.

The transmitter is energy efficient not just at maximum power but at all power levels.

ULTRA COMPACT SIZE: Concentrated power

This new series of transmitters consists of no more than two rack units and less than 33 pounds: half the weight of similar devices, with great advantages in terms of Shipping and handling.

PLANAR TECHNOLOGY

The Indium Series widely uses the planar technology for the entire RF section (RF modules, combiners, splitters and low-pass filter), to minimize internal connections and soldering. With all this, stability increases, chances of failure are severely reduced, and maintenance is simplified.

ECOSAVING

Due to the high electrical efficiency, the internal temperatures of the transmitters remain outstandingly low. Energy saving, environmental protection and long product life are guaranteed.

HIGHER POWER EFFICIENCY

The Indium series of transmitters have gone beyond the limits of technology and devices of today by proving power efficiency of up to 80%. These levels make a big difference in operation costs, and the heat reduction increases the useful life of the transmitter.

EVERYTHING IS UNDER CONTROL WITH “EASY SURFING”: SIMPLE AND IMMEDIATE MONITORING

Indium has also given special attention to ergonomics. It’s now possible to configure all the parameters of the transmitter by simply navigating through the software menus by using a control knob. The transmitter features some easy access buttons as well which take you directly to main functions of it, so you can operate it immediately.

All operating parameters such as voltage, temperature, power, among others, are shown in an O-LED display. Transmitter also includes a series of LEDs that provide a quick snapshot of the main state of the equipment. Complete monitoring capabilities of all the parameters featured on the transmitter usually allow maintenance to be performed without special instruments.

NO CORROSION

In ELENOS, we pay particular attention to the flow of air inside the transmitter, so we make sure that the direct flow of cooling air doesn’t come in touch with the equipment’s electronic boards by inducing a process of tropicalization, so all these boards are protected from moisture. The transmitter’s parts are all-aluminum in order to avoid any kind of corrosion. By doing all this, we ensure that the transmitter can work in extreme environmental conditions.

LIFEXTENDER

During extreme operating conditions, the LifeXtender® option guarantees a safe performance of the transmitter. The transmitter’s cooling system is upgraded to support high temperatures, and a unit automatically decreases output power in cases of high reflected power or temperature, extending the device’s useful life, and lowering maintenance costs.

CONNECTIVITY

  • Features TC/TS for integration with exchange systems and the interface at each remote monitoring system, carried out directly by the device’s software.
  • The transmitter can store up to 6 different profiles of operation where you can configure all its working parameters (frequency, power, audio modes, levels, and more). Six relay outputs with indication of the profile in use. The interface allows the transmitter to be used as a reserve in any N+1 system.
  • Transmitters from the Indium Series can be supplied with Ethernet port for connecting to a network with TCP/IP — SNMP. The transmitter also has an integrated web server for control over the internet. (This option will be available soon).
